The Meghalaya Community Led Landscape Management Project (MCLLMP)

The Meghalaya Community Led Landscape Management Project (MCLLMP), a specialized project of the Government of Meghalaya, supported by the World Bank was officially launched on 8th of May, 2018. This unique project is set to spread over a period of five years.

The project is aimed at strengthening rural communities and traditional institutions so they can take charge of their natural resources by implementing community led sustainable community natural resource management plans in a systematic manner.

Common Landscape Problems in MCLLMP areas in Meghalaya

Meghalaya is a state with almost 70 per cent of geographical area under forest cover but what is not taken into account is how 40 per cent of this forest cover has degraded into open forests and shrubs. There are many reasons for the widespread land degradation which are tied to key environmental issues which need immediate addressal.

Deforestation, mining and shifting agriculture (jhuming) have been hugely responsible for many of the environmental concerns of the state. This is where the role of MCLLMP or CLLMP, as it is commonly know, comes in as the project tries to find solutions through various interventions.

Besides addressing the above mentioned issues, CLLMP is also playing an effective role in bringing communities together while binding them to a common and sustainable cause while also empowering the women folk of Meghalaya’s matrilineal society by giving them an opportunity in decision making processes.
